Architects introduce Folly competition

Two architects from Logic architects in Middlesbrough came into the Le Corbusier class today to help us get stared on a competition which the Year 5/6 classes have entered.

The National Trust and RIBA are working with schools across North Yorkshire and have oraganised a competition whereby the children are inverted to design a folly for Fountains Abbey. The winning design will be built in the grounds of Fountains Abbey.

Mark and Kevin came in and gave a short presentation on what architects do and showed the children a few famous buildings which included some from our chosen architects too. They  explained what a folly is and even taped out the area of the land on which the design has to fit.

The children then went on to start designing their entry for the competition and are coming up with some incredible ideas. We’ll post a few designs when they are nearer completion so look out for them.

Kevin will be coming back to visit us and help us further in a few weeks. Mark and Kevin have also very kindly offered to turn one of our entries into a 3 D model which will be very exciting!

The children also had the opportunity to ask them questions about being an architect. Most were surprised that it took 7 years to train and that you do not have to be talented at art: you just need to be creative!

Mrs Sadler spent the afternoon working with Piano class getting them started on their entries and later this week will work with Gaudi class.

We really

love this work on architecture.

  1. A super start to the competition. The study of architecture and learning about the lives of Le Corbusier, Renzo Piano and Gaudi have led to some super design opportunities.

  2. I was very puzzled as to why there was masking tape on the floors in the Y5/6 classrooms… Thanks for solving the mystery!
