Northallerton Schools Debating Competing

On Friday 17th March, we took a team of 6 children to the Hambleton DIstrict Council chambers to take part a debating competition. The children were debating ‘ Is homework a waste of time?’ BW and RH were our two speakers with EJ, RW, EJ and RC supporting them.

BW and RH had written their own arguments and the others in the team had helped them by listening to them, suggesting improvements such as keeping eye contact and adding emotion.

We were up first and the two girls were fantastic.. RH even made the judges laugh!  The were then grilled by the other 3 schools and they both stood their ground backing up their points of view.

The other schools then had their turn at speaking and our children were then able to ask them questions.

Our team didn’t win but  won the ‘best girl speaker’ which was fantastic. This is the third year in a row one of our children have won Best speaker award.

Even though we didn’t we, we had a great time and the children were so proud of themselves (as were we).

  1. Well done team! After your recent experiences of creating podcasts – I’m looking forward to listening to a re run of your speeches on line.
You represented your school very well indeed. We are all very proud of you and your classes.
