Doctor, Doctor!

This afternoon we were SO lucky to have a special visitor to Penguins and Puffins classes.  Rowan’s mummy, AKA Dr Micklethwaite, came to talk to us about her job as a doctor and about how to be safe with medicines.

She had made a brilliant video to help explain what happens when you visit the surgery and pharmacy. Dr Micklethwaite brought along lots of equipment and (empty!) medicine boxes to show us too. She explained that medicine can be dangerous if it isn’t taken properly or if you take medicine meant for someone else.

She also showed us an ibuprofen tablet and how it looked just like a pink Smartie.  That reminded us that we must NEVER eat a tablet if we don’t know what it is and without a grown up knowing.

Dr Micklethwaite set Penguins and Puffins a challenge – Can you find out where you keep your medicines and are they in a safe place out of reach?

Here is a little quiz to check your listening skills from the visit, thinking about the vocabulary that Dr Micklethwaite introduced us to this afternoon:

1. What does a thermometer check?

2. What do we use a stethoscope for?

3. What are doctors checking for when they look into your ears?

4. What is a pharmacist’s job?

5. What information would you find on a medicine label?

A great big thank you to Dr Micklethwaite for her hard work in preparing for today’s visit and for sharing so much information about a very important topic. Thanks too to Mr Whiteley for technical support (again!) and Mrs Goodwin for swooping to the rescue to teach the Puffins whilst we overcame technical difficulties!

  1. Yes, a big thank you to Dr Micklethwaite for coming to talk to us about such an important topic. It was lovely to see the children’s enthusiasm for handling all the equipment; listening to their own heartbeats and finding out their heart rates. I was particularly impressed by the questions!
